Argentina: Holidays and Bribery, Uruguay Explosion, Brazil’s Former Prez

Siemans High Speed Train in China??
Argentina is obviously not a part to that fictitious evangelical-invented “War on Christmas!”The word “holiday” derived from the notion of "Holy Day" and gradually evolved to its current form. It actually comes from the Old English word haligdæg, which originally referred only to special religious days. Thus those who refuse the “Happy Holidays” greeting are actually  refusing to acknowledge the oldest form of greeting for the “High Holy Days,” the time of year when little baby Jesus’ birth is commemorated by Christians the world over. For those of us in Argentina, the holiday season just got better, when the Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo announced that four additional days would be added to this year’s celebrations. They are Friday December 23, Monday December 26, Friday December 30 and Monday January 2. Now, we will have two 4-day weekends, with three days in between where no one will be able to get anything official done anyway. I will do all my shopping way in advance to stay off the roads, where the annual carnage will take place due to the porteños from Buenos Aires rushing around the country, sort of like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona during the San Fermin Festival. To make it more exciting for all, the Dakar Rally Raid starts on January 1st and will come roaring by our house on the 2nd.
SIEMENS AG, the giant German everything conglomerate has just had eight of its former executives indicted in United States of America for violating the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Between 1996 and 2007, they paid bribes of US$100 million to top Argentinean officials, including two presidents and several cabinet ministers, in order to obtain the lucrative National Identity Card contract. The indicted individuals live in Germany, Argentina, and Switzerland, but the U.S. Justice Department has not yet announced whether they will seek their extradition. The recipients of the bribes in Argentina certainly made sure that their share was distributed equitably amongst all politicians, so that there will never be any possible prosecution.Montevideo had quite a scare yesterday, December 13, when a large explosion in the Ministry of Labor blew out windows and starting a localized blaze. It is thought that the explosion was caused by a welding spark, which ignited solvent and adhesive fumes lingering in the area from the installation of parquet flooring. There were several mostly minor injuries, while the architect of the project received wounds from a large glass shard that became embedded in his chest. President José Mujica conducted an onsite survey, but all concerned were satisfied that it was an accidental incident and not terrorist related. The still widely admired Lula da Silva received his third and final round of chemotherapy on December 12, impressing his doctors with his progress. The near future will bring several months of radiation treatments to combat the tumor on his larynx. The size of the potentially lethal growth has been reduced by an impressive 75%, much more than had been anticipated. As in most cancers, early detection and aggressive treatment seem to give the patient the greatest chance of long term survivability. What a shame that Steve Jobs wasted a year with useless holistic and spiritual treatments. It is widely agreed in the medical community that his cancer was highly treatable with excellent long-term survivability.
